How to Get to Windhoek - A comprehensive guide!

The Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, which is located 42 kilometres to the east of the city, is where international planes touch down. It is more common to travel to Namibia through Johannesburg due to the fact that you have a better chance of finding a more affordable last-minute offer if you are willing to do some research online. Like everywhere else in the globe, the earlier you make your reservation to get to Windhoek, the cheaper the ticket will be.

Entry Requirements

You do not require a visa to visit Namibia if you are a visitor from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa. This also applies to visitors from Western Europe. If this is not the case, you must inquire with the Namibian diplomatic representation in the nation in which you are located. You are still required to have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry and has at least 2 blank pages for stamps. Additionally, you must be able to provide proof of onward travel. You may also be required to show proof of accommodation. With many affordable lodgings available in Zambia, this will not be difficult. You can reserve accommodation at properties like Avani Windhoek Hotel & Casino. Given that there are plenty of things to do in Windhoek, going to a hotel that is located close to many attractions and activities will be the best option.

Flights departing from the United Kingdom and Ireland

There aren’t any direct flights to Namibia available from either the United Kingdom or Ireland. The most direct option is to fly from the UK to Johannesburg using one of the many available airlines. Also, flights departing from the United Kingdom, often from Heathrow, will always cost more during the peak travel season. A route that is somewhat longer, but also only makes one stop, is currently offered by Qatar Airways through Doha 4 times per week at costs that are comparable to those of other airlines. If you are willing to fly more roundabout routes with 2 stops on less popular carriers (such as Ethiopian Airlines), you will have access to more affordable choices. If you are flying from Ireland, your options for making a connection are either in London or in any of the other cities in Europe that have airlines that fly to Johannesburg.

Flights departing from the United States and Canada

There is not a single airline based in the United States or Canada that operates direct flights to Namibia. However, several cities in the United States, such as New York and Atlanta, have nonstop flights to Johannesburg.

Flights departing from Australia and New Zealand

There are flights departing from both Australia and New Zealand. The fastest and most convenient method to go to Namibia from Australia is to fly straight to Johannesburg on Qantas or South African Airways from either Sydney (13 hours) or Perth (about 11 hours), then change planes in Johannesburg. Coming from New Zealand, travelling to Sydney is the most direct option.

Overland by car

Both the Noordoewer border crossing on the B1 (the route to Cape Town), as well as the Ariamsvlei border crossing on the B3 (the route to Johannesburg), are the primary entrance sites for cars coming from South Africa. Both crossings are open around the clock. If you are travelling from north Botswana, the primary border crossings are at Ngoma or Mohembo, both of which are located in the Zambezi Region. The Trans Kalahari Highway crosses Namibia at Buitepos, which is located 315 kilometres east of Windhoek.
